Summer is here and with the warmer weather arriving many of us will be spending more time outdoors and even heading away on holiday.
But whilst we enjoy the sunshine, it’s important to remember that the summer months are a real hotspot for home burglaries and that extra home security precautions are advisable.
Here we offer some top tips for keeping your home safe and secure over the summer, whether at home or on holiday.
Be watchful of windows
Though it is very tempting to keep windows open when the weather is warm, this can present security issues. Make sure that you close windows in unattended parts of your home, particularly on the ground floor, and never risk leaving windows unlocked or ajar overnight.
Keep unattended doors locked
If you are enjoying a day in the garden, always remember to shut the doors at the front and side of your home. Many summer burglaries occur during the day when thieves believe that householders are outside and pre-occupied, so an unlocked door becomes an open invite for intruders.
Protect your valuables
When heading away on going on holiday, make sure to hide away any valuable items before you leave. In the unfortunate event of a burglary this helps to make sure that your most precious items are properly protected, especially when investing in additional security options such as a safe.
Beware malfunctioning locks
If you are hoping to enjoy a couple of weeks in the sun, it’s important to know that the lock systems in your home are performing properly. Any malfunctioning locks are highly vulnerable to skilled burglars, so strongly consider having faulty systems repaired or replaced.
Organise a drop-in
At a time of year when many properties are left empty whilst homeowners are on holiday, burglars will be on the look out for houses that seem unoccupied. Having a neighbour or other trusted person drop around to open and close the curtains and clear away post is a great way of making a house appear to be occupied, a key deterrent for would-be burglars.
