For any homeowner or renter, home security should be taken very seriously. Burglars are opportunist and will take any chance to break into your home, so it’s important to do what you can to help protect your home and property, not to mention, yourself and your family.
To help you keep your home safer and deter burglars, the West Midlands police have provided some essential tips for improving security across different parts of your house.
Doors
- Ideally, front doors should have a viewer and a door chain. It’s also important that letter boxes are positioned in a way that prevents anyone from reaching through to release the lock.
- Wooden back doors should be fitted with at least two bolts and a five-lever mortice deadlock to improve security.
- Doors with euro cylinders should be fitted with anti-snap locks to prevent common techniques used by burglars to gain entry.
Patio Doors
- Whilst most modern patio doors feature multi-point locking systems, older doors should be fitted with locksmith approved patio door locks and the top and bottom of a sliding door.
- Anti-lift devices help to prevent a patio door from being lifted off its runners.
- Any patio door with a euro cylinder locking system should be fitted with an anti-snap lock.
Windows
- All windows, especially ground floor windows, or windows that open onto accessible areas should be fitted with locks, unless designated as an escape point in case of emergency.
Glazing
- Laminated safety glass provides the best option for window and door glazing.
- For the highest level of protection, laminated glass on both inner and outer surfaces is best.
Should you be unsure about security for windows and doors, consult a locksmith. Master Locksmith Association accredited locksmiths can provide valuable advice and lock fitting services.
Garages, Sheds and Greenhouses
Garages, sheds, greenhouses and other greenhouses often house lots of expensive items, so it’s important to take steps to secure them and protect them from burglars.
- Put away all tools and equipment so that it’s not visible.
- Make sure all outbuildings are securely locked when not in use.
- See if your burglar alarm system can be extended to cover outbuildings or install a shed alarm.
- Install outside security lighting that comes on automatically at dusk, deterring burglars and alerting you.
